The European Commission has presented controversial proposals in the wake of the Belarusian-organized migrant attack on the borders of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Although the document is being promoted as a special consideration to the Member States at risk before it is approved by the European Council and Parliament, it will not actually change the critical situation at our borders.
With the unpleasant events on Latvia's eastern border growing deeper and military and armchair experts already discussing when Russia's new attack on Ukraine will begin, it is worth recalling that Latvia's national security reserves of petroleum products are still stored abroad in significant quantities and that next year also almost a fifth of the fuel needed in the event of a crisis may not be available. Aviation fuel and petrol, although reserved in small quantities, are almost entirely held abroad.

Bet cīņā par bloka ārējās robežas drošību migrantu apdraudētās valstis joprojām ir vientuļas.

The installation of a monument in the cemetery of Red Army soldiers in the village of Kapsēde has brought to a close the story of the homecoming of the Aloja Freedom Monument, created by sculptor Kārlis Zāle. For three years the stand stood empty, and now a typical Red Army man has taken the place of the departed Latvian freedom fighter, because of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation. 30 years after Latvia regained its independence, a new monument to the Soviet occupation troops has been erected again.
By taking a short-sighted view of events on the Belarusian border, the European Union and NATO may miss the bigger events that Russia is staging. The attempt to grant special privileges to the LGBT community in the Criminal Law has been stopped, but the idea of restrictions on freedom of expression has not been abandoned altogether, and is now being pushed forward in a more moderate format in the Law on Administrative Penalties by the Ministry of the Interior, run by the Development/For (Attīstībai/Par) party alliance. It remains to be seen whether the Saeima will dare to open this Pandora's box.

The Latvian education system is facing the loss of young people due to the Russian Federation's compatriot policy. The problem is caused not only by private distance learning institutions, which offer primary and secondary school students the opportunity to move to Russia virtually but also by a special government program that encourages them to study at Russian universities. This is basically stealing promising Latvian Russian youths.
Pieskaņojoties Krievijas Federācijā iedibinātajai Nezināmā kareivja dienai, arī Latgalē decembra sākumā notiks sarkanarmiešu kapu svētki ar okupācijas spēku kritušo karavīru pārapbedīšanu. Iespējams, tie būs pat divi lieli pasākumi vienā dienā – pārapbedīšana notiks Līvānos un, iespējams, arī Krāslavas novada Izvaltā. Bet vainagu nolikšana un slavas dziesmas padomju armijai izskanēs visā Latvijā, jo tāda ir Kremļa un tā atbalstītāju lietotā metode.
In line with the Day of the Unknown Soldier in the Russian Federation, a Red Army cemetery festival will be held in Latgale at the beginning of December, with the reburial of fallen soldiers of the occupation forces. It may even be two big events on the same day - the reburial will take place in Līvāni and possibly also in Izvalta in the Krāslava municipality. But wreath-laying and songs of praise for the Soviet army will be heard throughout Latvia because that is the method used by the Kremlin and its supporters.
