The Angermanland District Court in Sweden has sentenced migrant Abubaker Mohamad Awad to life imprisonment. Justice has triumphed, as long one considers justice to be a murderer and rapist being sustained using Swedish people's money. Meanwhile, the Latvian Center for Human Rights and other welcomers are worried that the coverage of this crime increases negative stereotypes and prejudices in Latvian society.
Latvia now has to decide how to act regarding the Migration and Asylum Pact proposed by the European Commission. The proposal offers Member States two alternatives: either to take in illegal migrants or to pay for their repatriation. And that is why Sweden's gloomy examples of migrant integration are so important. When choosing a future national strategy for these uninvited guests, the potential threat to our society must also be analyzed.
In addition to researchers, doctors and programmers, others who arrive in the European Union in criminal-chartered "refugee boats" are murderers, rapists and religious fanatics.
Liberals give them blankets, nationalists try to drive them back from where they came from. As national discussions on the future management of migrants continue, Latvia has also developed its position. For the time being, it is not made public before it is put in place. In any case, however, decision-makers need to know who is getting off the coast of Europe in order to take into account the possible consequences.
Abubaker Mohamad Awad was born in Sudan but immigrated to Sweden in 2005 with his parents. Here he received asylum, citizenship and benefits. However, it did not become an example of successful integration. In 2016, he was sentenced to a suspended sentence for sexual harassment. Convicted of shoplifting in the same year. In 2018, he was convicted of drug crimes. But on May 10 this year, he committed his most notorious crime. He came to a youth party uninvited, then refused to leave. He injured one of the guests, raped a girl, fatally stabbed the owner, 19-year-old Tommie Lindh, and then raped the girl again. According to the testimonies, he did so because of the display of the nationalist party caps on the shelf. Just hats. The Swedish media Aftonbladet and Expressen report that they handed down a verdict in court on Monday, which is life imprisonment for murder, attempted murder, rape and threats. The court found: “The murder has been particularly cruel and has also caused severe suffering to the deceased. Therefore, the punishment will be life imprisonment." Tommie Lindh died the day after the stabbing. The doctors couldn’t save his life. While Swedish nationalists talk about the damage that uncontrolled migration is doing to the peaceful Scandinavian society, liberals are stubbornly refusing to link the growing violence to the issue of migration.
And the same is happening in Latvia.
After Neatkarīgā’s publication Latvia should not have to say “Refugees welcome!”, the editorial office received a complaint from the Latvian Center for Human Rights that is financed by foreign funds. The crimes committed by Sudanese Abubaker Mohamad Awad must not be generalized. Here is a more detailed quote from the welcomer letter:
"The Latvian Center for Human Rights supports critical and objective articles on issues related to migration. At the same time, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the content of this article and the biased and one-sided information provided in it promote intolerance and hatred of asylum seekers on the grounds of race and nationality. The article describes the crimes committed over several years by a Sudanese refugee who became a Swedish citizen, including the heinous crimes for which the person is being tried. We would like to emphasize that any crime is to be condemned, regardless of the nationality, citizenship and legal status of the person who committed it. However, the author clearly illustrates with this example that the reception of asylum seekers from African and Asian countries is unacceptable and a threat, thus generalizing and attributing crimes committed by individuals to a large group of people based on their racial, ethnic and national origin and perpetuating negative stereotypes and prejudice in society."
In the continuation of the claim, the association points out that the article has promoted racist comments in the public space, lists examples and warns about turning to the State Security Service “for inciting national, racial and ethnic hatred in accordance with Section 78 of the Criminal Law”.
In a democratic society, everyone has the right to go where they want. In turn, the newspapers have the right and obligation to inform the public about issues that are important to it. Neatkarīgā also emphasized in its publication that every such case - every rape and every murder in society reinforces the stereotype that illegal migrants are a potential source of danger. However, it must be emphasized once again that stereotyping is a natural defense mechanism, and that is why the crime of Abubaker Mohamad Awad teaches that uninvited guests must be treated with the utmost caution. Tommie Lindhwas not suspicious enough and paid for it with his life.
Criminals on the shores of Europe should not be met with blankets and benefits, but with a clear message that they will be punished for crimes and then deported. The life sentence given by the Swedish court to Abubaker Mohamad Awad is a clear message. And not racism.
